The technology boom the world experienced over the past few years changed the way organizations think about cybersecurity. With the explosion of cloud infrastructure, hybrid workforces, and relentless digital transformation, businesses have leaned heavily into artificial intelligence (AI) as the answer to an increasingly complex threat landscape.

The use of AI, from automating threat detection to accelerating incident response, now plays an important role in most enterprises’ security stacks. But as the tools become more sophisticated, so do the assumptions. Many companies are beginning to treat AI as infallible, leaning on it to shoulder critical decisions that once required human intuition, deep domain knowledge, and contextual judgment.

This incident underscores a critical point: AI can only recognize what it knows, and threat actors are increasingly learning how to stay one step ahead.

One of the more dangerous outcomes of AI reliance is complacency. As more security functions are delegated to machines, some firms assume they can reduce headcount, cut analyst time, or deprioritize manual investigation.

They’re using AI to surface unusual behaviors, then relying on red teams or threat hunters (red teams actively probe for vulnerabilities in your systems, while threat hunters look for signs that someone else has already exploited them) to determine intent and severity.

This isn’t theory. The 2025 SANS Institute report found that organizations using a hybrid AI-human incident response model resolved breaches 36% faster on average than those relying primarily on automation.

Another growing practice is investing in explainable AI (XAI) systems, which are designed with transparency in mind. With XAI, analysts can see which features influenced a model’s decision, making it easier to spot blind spots or errors in reasoning.

Building guardrails: Strategic questions for B2B leaders

If you’re leading cybersecurity in your organization—or selling solutions into this space—now is the time to ask:

  • What assumptions are you making about the accuracy or completeness of your AI models?

Just as important is cultural change. Your teams must be trained to challenge AI decisions when necessary, not defer to them blindly.
