How Will the US’s New Cyber Strategy Strengthen Digital ID?

May 24, 2024

Amid a rising tide of cyber threats, the United States government has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to fortify its defenses with a significant focus on digital identity. This initiative, nestled within the broader National Cybersecurity Strategy Implementation Plan (NCSIP), champions a digital identity ecosystem as a paramount pillar of digital security. The ambitious plan encompasses various components aimed at enhancing digital ID, seeking to catalyze a secure, accessible, and all-encompassing framework that promises to elevate privacy and foster economic progress.

Reinforcement of Digital Identity Infrastructure

The updated U.S. cybersecurity strategy recognizes the critical role of digital identity in ensuring a secure online environment. Digital identities are at the core of virtually all internet-based interactions, from banking to accessing government services, making their protection and verifiability a primary concern for the Information Age. To address this, the strategy proposes federal investment in creating more robust digital identity solutions. Such investment not only underpins security facets but also advocates for principles of inclusivity and interoperability. The aim is to bridge the gaps that have historically impeded some populations from participating in the digital economy.

Creating a resilient digital identity infrastructure means devising new methods for authentication that do not rely solely on passwords—a widely recognized security weakness. Instead, the strategy encourages the development of technologies that employ multiple factors of authentication and biometric identifiers, which reduce the risk of identity fraud and unauthorized access. To guide these technological advances, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) plays a pivotal role. Through the enactment of stringent guidelines and the evaluation of emerging biometric technologies, NIST spearheads efforts to secure personal identification in the digital realm.
